7/3/2011 Bus from Chania to Herakleion/Irakleio, flight Olympic Air from Crete to Rhodes, Rhodes Town/Ibiscus Hotel,

Our last day in Crete!  Where did the time go?  We had such a great time and I felt we got to see and do a lot of non touristy stuff.  Breakfast-our last with George and Dimitra.

Lunch is french fries, sausages, Greek salad, kalamata olives bean mix salad, melon.  They want to make sure we don't leave hungry!

Despina and Costa

BUS.  George drives us to the bus station where we buy our tickets.  The bus departs 2:30 pm.  We have assigned seats.  Cost 13.80€ per person.  George and Richard are sad to say goodbye to each other.  We will miss our friends.  George waits until we are on the bus and it's pulling out of the station.  I think I saw a tear or two.  But now George can concentrate on being with his brother that he hasn't seen in several years.

Bus ticket

This bus is large but it's super comfortable.  Big seats with foot rests.  A/C.  We do make some stops to pick up and let off people.  It was a very nice ride.  We arrived around 5:00 pm.  We have lots of time before our flight.  I suppose we could have done a bit of sightseeing but we didn't want to take any chances on missing our flight.  At the bus station we buy drinks.  Then taxi to the airport 15€.

We stopped here around 3:30 pm

FLIGHT TO RHODES.  I had booked this months ago.  Our flight is Olympic Air #877 non stop from Heraklion to Rhodes town.  Departs 8:45 pm and is scheduled to arrive at 9:40 pm.  Cost of tickets 196€/$274.51.  I also had to pay 24€/$34.81 for excess baggage.  You are each allowed 1 checked bag per person and we had 3 due to our snorkel and scuba gear bag.

Herakleion Airport

While in Crete we had so much good Greek food.  Here's a list of just some of the things we had at our lunch on 6/26 and dinner on 7/2.  Raki liquor, mayiritsa/intestines, Greek quiche, vlita/greens, marathon kaltounia, loukoumathes/fried dough balls dipped in honey, goat cheese kaetounia drizzled with honey, sea urchin, stuffed zucchini and grape leaves, kolokotronis thokeftedes, apaki/aged smoked pork, baubouristi/wine, stake, kapnisto loukaniko/smoked sausage with oregano and vinegar.  Then other things not so out of the ordinary like rice pilaf, chicken, grilled pork chops, grilled pancetta, Greek salad, escargot/snails.  I must say that some of the best food we had while in Greece was when we were in Crete!

RHODES.  Capital of the Dodecanese.  Was an important center in the 5th to 3rd centuries BC.  It was part of both the Roman and Byzantine empires before being conquered by the Knights of St. John.  They occupied Rhodes from 1306 to 1522 and their medieval walled city still dominates Rhodes town.  Ottoman and Italian rulers followed.  Sandy beaches, good hiking, and lively nightlife.

By the time we arrived it was dark.  I had reserved a car for us from Budget for 3 days for 105€/$152.82.  It was a cute Chevy Spark.  Found our hotel without mishap.  Even a place to park the car on the street.

IBISCUS HOTEL.  We will stay here 3 nights from 7/3-7/6.  It is supposed to be close to Old Town where most of the sightseeing is.  Check in went smoothly.  Our room is #135.  Quite large.  A little dated decor but clean and fine for us.  We had what looked like a king or queen bed, a small table with 2 chairs, a couch and the bathroom had a tub/shower combo.  Hairdryer.  A balcony with a view to the beach and sea but it's too dark now to really appreciate the view.  Too late to go out for dinner as we arrived around 11:00 pm.

Complimentary bottle of wine
