6/24/2011 Santorini/Atrina, Red Beach, Kamari Beach, Amoudi, sunset, dinner at Katina's

Another tasty breakfast delivered to us to have on our balcony.  Fresh fruit, yogurt, chocolate chip pound cake, croissants, fig pie, orange juice, coffee.  I'm finally feeling better!  I could sit here and look at this view forever.  So awesome.  Today we will do more exploring.

RED BEACH.  We find this beach fairly easily.  Difficult to access.  You have to climb down a path to get to the beach.  We spend 2 hours here.

This is an excursion boat that takes you to the 3 beaches listed

KAMARI BEACH.  Have to stop for gas 15€.  Iconic blue domed buildings as we drive are so pretty and so Santorini.  This beach is easy to access but it's very wavy.  I am not a swimmer so I like calm beaches best.  The beach is a mix of stone and black volcanic sand.    There are bars and tavernas here.  Only stayed one hour here.

Very pebbly

A bit too rough for my liking

Lots of loungers and umbrellas

Surprised at how many empty ones we saw

We've decided that we have had enough beach time and want to return to Oia.  Lovely scenery on the way back.  But it seems there's beauty everywhere in Santorini!

We pass Santo Wines

Kayakers

I think this is a shrine by the side of the road

AMMOUDI.  Fishing village and harbor under the cliffs of Oia.  In order to reach it you must walk down  but we find you can drive to a point, park the car, and then it's a short walk.  I see donkeys so maybe you can catch a ride down with them also.  Lots of tourists boats depart daily from here for the small island of Thirasia.  We wanted to check this place out as we're thinking of having dinner here.  I check to see if we need a reservation for Katina's but am told no need.  So we stop to buy some drinks-sprite and coke-and a bag of peanut M & Ms for me and my sweet tooth-3.44€.  Back to our hotel we spend time at the pool.

This is the walkway from Oia to Ammoudi-these folks are walking from Ammoudi back up to Oia

We are thinking about this place for dinner tonight

It's nice that the menu is posted

SUNSET.   I've done some research and found another place to view the sunset.  We drive to the desalination plant.  Park the car.  Walk up to where there is a path that goes all the way from Fira to Oia.  Here we have a beautiful view of Oia village and the sunset.  Much less crowded.  Definitely a  better experience
Lovely view of Oia from here

KATINA'S.  Dinner.  This restaurant is located in Ammoudi.  Great reviews.  Here you pick out the fish you want, it's weighed and that's how you pay-by weight and kind of fish you choose.  We start with the famous tomato balls.  Fried tomatoes with cheese and breading.  The fish we picked is red snapper for 23€.  Prices on the fish vary from 50-90€ per kg.  Plate of french fries.  Iced coffee, coke, beer.  Cost without tip 46€.  Food was fantastic.  Fish grilled perfectly and those tomato balls-heaven.  A great choice for our last night in Santorini.

Seems like all the restaurants in Ammoudi are busy

Back to our place to pack.  If I had to do it all over again I would have stayed more than our 3 nights. We really had no time to explore Fira-the capital.  And I would have liked to book a day excursion.  I had researched excursions that sounded like they would be fun.  Sunset cruise.  Some included visit to the island of Thirassia.
