6/23/2011 Santorini/Atrina, Santo Wines, Perissa Beach, Domaine Siglas, sunset, dinner at Nectar and Ambrosia

I wake up still feeling ill.  We call and breakfast is brought to us.  We sit out on our terrace.  There's yogurt, fresh fruit, orange juice, tea that I requested.  A basket of spinach and cheese pies, apple pies, croissants, Italian bread, pound cake with chocolate chips, and bars of apple crisp.  Way too much food!  I take the wrapped bars of apple crisps with us for a snack/pick me up for later.  Drop off laundry.  Cost for the items I want cleaned 20€.

Breakfast

We are relieved to find the car where Richard parked it yesterday and no ticket.  One thing we never took into consideration when renting a car was that it's not easy to find a parking space for the car in Oia.  Our first order of the day is to make a visit to a winery I've read about.

SANTO WINES.  There is a tour we take 2.6€ per person.  It was interesting and informative.  There are some awesome views from the store.  I bought 2 bottles of 2004 Visanto and 2 bottles of white/Nykteri Reserve to take to Crete.  Also bought some travel size bottles for family back home.  61.29€ total for the 4 bottles.    I inquired about buying more of the large bottles and shipping them home but the shipping charge was outrageous.  Something like $100USD just for the shipping charge for 6 bottles.

PERISSA BEACH.  Black sand and a bit pebbly which is not the kind of beach I really like.  I much prefer a sandy beach.  But the water feels so good.  You can rent loungers with umbrella.  Lots of watersports.  We stayed here around 40 minutes.

Not the soft sandy beach that I like

Back in the car we are trying to find Red Beach.  No luck and somehow we ended up at the Hellenic Navy Lighthouse.  Too bad it's closed!  Beautiful scenery on our drive.  My camera was very busy!

DOMAINE SIGLAS.  To get to this winery we take the back road heading back towards Oia.  We have a light lunch of crispy wheat bread, cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, green pepper.  Fruit juice, water.  Cost without tip 9.5€.

Grapes

Back in Oia we find a parking space.  Back at Atrina we spend almost 2 hours at the pool.  We opened our free bottle of white wine.  It was tasty.

SUNSET.  Hoards of tourists descend on Oia for sunset.  Lots of tour buses.  The end point of the pedestrian walkway is crammed with people to watch the sunset.  The colors were beautiful but just too many people for me to really enjoy the experience.

OIA.  We explore the town a bit before dinner.  Lots of shops, restaurants, art galleries, even a church or two.  Oia has some great places to shop.  I spy a Pandora store.  They have a Greek charm for my Pandora bracelet which I bought 40€.  I pick up a pretty scarf for my aunt 12€.  A caftan for myself 20€.  Some postcards 3.9€.

Pandora Greek charm I bought

Caftan I bought-just love the colors!

NECTAR AND AMBROSIA.  Dinner.  There is a good range of several intriguing items.  Richard is back on his Greek salad kick.  Mythos beer.  I chose spinach ravioli in white wine/cream/Greek saffron sauce.  Very enjoyable dinner.  Good service.  Cost without tip 31.20€.

Tomorrow we will try to explore some more beaches.  I'm bummed that Akrotiri 16th century BC is not open for tourists as I had really wanted to visit this important archaeological site.  An ancient Minoan city preserved after being buried under volcanic dust from an eruption.
