6/10/2011 Nafplio/Aetoma, Mycenae, Ancient Corinth, Corinth Canal, dinner at Episkinis

Breakfast is fantastic but still too much food.  Fruit, yogurt, croissants, omelet, bacon, orange juice, tea.

MYCENAE.  Another day trip.  Takes us around one hour to get here.  Large parking area.  Admission 8€ per person.  Mythical city of King Agamemmon.  Prehistoric acropolis.  Cyclopean walls, Lion Gate, North Gate, Mycenaean houses, tombs of the Atreides family.  Tomb of King Agamemmon.  Archeological Museum.  Golden death mask of Agamemmon is in the Athens Archaeological Museum.  Love all the signage with explanations and pictures.  Amazing views.  We have to drive to see the Treasury of Atreus as it is located a little way from the main site.  Our little car is great.  I bought some postcards for 7.5€.  We spent 2 1/2 hours here.

ANCIENT CORINTH.  Takes us about one hour to get here from Mycenae.  Had to pay 2.4€ toll. Stopped for petrol but it was only 5.73 €.  Admission 6€ per person.   Excellent signage.  Temple of Apollo overlooks the remains of the Roman Agora.  Only 7 Doric columns remain.  Can see the 39' wide marble paved road that ran from port of Lechaion into the market place.  In the Agora-Fountain of Peirene and the Bema (platform).  Winding dirt road to summit of Acrocorinth-view.  We spent almost 1 1/2 hours here.

One last look

CORINTH CANAL.  It was difficult for us to not only find this but to find a place to park the car so we could walk over to the canal.  We are lucky in that we see ships passing through.  At the souvenir store I bought a Greek hat 9 € for my dad.

Back to our hotel we walk into town to do some shopping.  At The Olive Tree store I bought a picture frame made of olive tree wood.  Also a small round box with a lid, some olive oil soap.  Cost 50.50€.  At another store I got a Greek coffee mug and some postcards-7.3€.  Stop for gelato Antica Gelateria 7€.  Back at our hotel I want to check out the church that is next door.  Agios Spiridon.  Kapodistrias who was the first governor of independent Greece was assassinated outside this church in 1831.

EPISKINIS.  Dinner.  Richard continues with his Greek salad kick.  I ordered the stuffed vine leaves-minced meat and rice.  Sauce of lemon and tarragon.  Came with french fries.  Bread.  Mythos beer.  I decided to try Greek coffee but it was too thick and strong.  Can't believe that I didn't take any pictures of our food!  It was good.  Cost without tip 20.5€.

After our nice dinner we decided to take a leisurely stroll by the harbor.  We can see Bourtzi Island Fortress lit up but the camera doesn't get a good image of what we saw.  There's what looks to be a horse and carriage-for hire maybe?  That would be a nice ride around town.  There's also a little train that looks like it would take tourists around?  We head back to our hotel to pack as we leave tomorrow to go to Olympia.  I've really enjoyed our time in this quaint little town.

Tourist train?
