6/26/2011 Crete/Chania, statue Spiros-Cretan hero, Venizelos grave site, lunch Dimitra's mom, sunset

Breakfast was yogurt, olives, maybe bread.  I didn't write down what we had but I do remember the yogurt.  And honey?  Today we are going to just do a bit of sightseeing.  Dimitra's mom is planning a nice lunch for us so looking forward to that.

STATUE OF SPIROS KAGIALES.   Rebels had raised a Greek flag at this spot.  Ottoman forces had requested help.  The ships of the Great Powers fleet bombarded the rebel positions.  A shell broke the flagpole and threw down the flag.  Spiros became a legend when on February 9, 1897 he turned his body into a flagpole in order to raise the Greek flag when Akrotiri was being shelled by the Italians.  This made them to stop bombing in recognition of his heroic act.  Awesome views to Chania from here-the Akrotiri peninsula.

TOMBS OF VENIZELOS.  Standing at the top of the hill of Prophet Elias at a site with a magnificent view of the city of Chania this is the burial place of Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936) and of his son Sophocles (1894-1964).  The spot was suggested by Eleftherios himself as it is located a few miles from his home in Chalepa.  His body was brought to the Tombs after his death in Paris in 1936 and in 1965 followed the building of the tomb of his son and Prime Minister of Greece Sophocles.  You can read the eulogy  Eleftherios gave himself in a speech to Parliament in 1932 and has been written in metallic letters next to his grave.  "The deceased was a true man with courage and confidence for himself and for the people who was invited to govern maybe he made a lot of mistakes but never lacked the courage never been a fatalist because wasn't expecting from fate to see his country being advanced however put at its service all the fire he had every mental and physical strength"

LUNCH AT DIMITRA'S MOM'S PLACE.  So much food!  Can't begin to say how fantastic all the food was.  There's nothing better than home cooking.  Such a good time.  Greek singing.

Dessert

I don't remember what we did for the rest of the day.  I think we just relaxed, caught up.  George tells us that his brother Costa and his wife are arriving in a new days.  They live in Australia.

SUNSET.  Beautiful views of Chania.  We drove up to a viewpoint place so these pictures are looking down to Chania.  Got to meet George's best friend Christo.  I'm not sure if we did anything for dinner as I don't have anything written down in my notebook.  We had such a big lunch that if we did eat dinner I believe it would have been something light.

There are restaurants here where you can eat, drink, and admire the view
